Importance of Weight Lifting for Runners

Running is a sport of constant motion. With that being said running will take its toll on your body. I like to think of the human body as a machine (like a car). So if you want your car to go long and fast it needs to have parts that's are capable of strength and endurance.  Following through with the analogy we see that as long distance runners we see that there is a need to strengthen our muscles.

The first thing that is important to know is that in order to obtain muscular endurance you have to keep the following concept in mind. In order to have to muscular endurance you should have low amount of weight and a high amount of repetitions. Ideally if you are just starting to run you should improve upper body strength. With more upper body strength you will have a better posture. Here are some good upper body workouts:http://ncrunnerdude.blogspot.com/2010/08/upper-body-workout-for-runners.html

In addition to the upper body a focus should be put on muscle nerve coordination. The best workouts to do to improve muscle nerve coordination is single leg squats as well as single handed push ups. In order to do the single leg squats go down as far as you can go. If your just starting try to do three sets of one. Same for the single handed push ups. Push ups are great for a workout routine because they can done pretty much anywhere and they work a good majority of the upper body. Stability ball hand offs also work great for this. Here is how to do it. Mixed grip chin ups also work great.  To sum things up exercises should involve mental concentration

It is important to note that if you are weight lifting for the first time you will feel sourness because you are using muscles that your body is not used to using.  Strength training is good to do on easy days. Make sure you do a good warm up. Your muscles should be warm before stretching. This will help to provide insurance that you will not pull a muscle.

Go out and Get Strong!
