Mentality for 5K Race

Yesterdays post primarily featured the physical aspects of running a 5K race. Today we are going to shift our focus to the mental aspect of preparing for a 5K race. Anyone who has been in competitive running knows that running much more physical than it is mental. The ability to push yourself though a race when the pain is immense is a important feature of a quality runner. If your racing someone and your trying to beat them and their pulling ahead are you able to beat them. Or maybe it is something simple as trying to accomplish your best. It is times such as this that having a proper training mentality will come in handy and serve you well.

One of the first items that necessary to develop a solid running mentality is mental toughness. Mental toughness is simply how much adversity you can handle while running a race. How well can you tune out those around you and focus on the task of beating everyone else?  How well can you block out that side cramp that has been nagging at you for the last mile? What it really boils down to is how far can you push your breaking point.

Another item that is commonly tossed around in the arena of the running world is motivation. Can you find the desire within yourself to keep pushing forward? In a way motivation is a connected element of mental toughness in the sense that its what pushes you forward. It is the guide that aids us in our battle against adversity during the 5K race. To dive in deeper onto the topic of Motivation check out this post Motivation.

A third element of mentality is the strategic part of running in the race. Items to take into account are things that are as simple as How Fast do you want to go out and run the first mile? Who do you want to beat? At what point and time should I pass this particular person during the race. All of these questions should serve as a aid in helping to develop  a solid racing strategy.  More attention will be paid to racing strategy on Thursday.   However it is important to note that these general questions serve as a starting block and foundation for learning how to race well.
